Prejudice exists in various different ways in our daily life and different group of people will be confronted with different kinds of prejudice due to their being inferior in a certain aspect when compared with others. There is no doubt that prejudice has caused great harm to the vast majority of people that have been prejudiced so that it should be laid high emphasis on for the sake of personal interests of the wide public.In“Blue-Collar Brilliance”and“Lean In:Women,Work, and the Will to Lead”,Mike Rose and Sheryl Sandberg, respectively, address the existence of prejudice in one way or another and they talk about how people should look at prejudice and react to it.By comparing and contrasting these two texts, varying elements can be gained about the opinion that prejudice should be removed even if efforts have to be made and all the ones should be treated equally and respected by.
As both authors explore prejudice, these two authors believe that prejudice does exist and it has exerted imperceptible impacts on the large number of people that are being despised and those that despise others. They both hold that efforts should be made to break through prejudice so as not to influence badly toward more people in approaching days.It can successfully arouse the attention of people toward the prejudice issues and people will reflect on themselves about whether they have been prejudiced by or whether they have prejudiced others in the past. But what is different is that Mike Rose emphasizes more on the prejudice toward the group called blue-collar workers, among which his mother is a representative. And Rose successfully delivers his opinion to the audience by describing what he learned as a child observing how his mother worked as a waitress in the coffee and family shops. However,Sheryl Sandberg focuses more on the prejudice toward women, through which she puts forward that women should have the ambition to lean in to their career and run the world. From the perspective of Sandberg, women have the ability to change the world and it is an effective way for them to get themselves rid of the destiny of being looked down upon. The differences between these two authors can enable us to understand that people should firstly have the ambition and courage to lean in to the career so that they can obtain necessary intelligence, skills and wisdom from the social and technological dynamics of their workplace through problem solving, proper planning and social interactions later on in the workplace. As a result, prejudice toward them can be removed step by step.
In the point of view of Rose,it is irrational to judge people according to their level of education and people should be given the recognition they deserve regardless of how much education they have received. He is not in favor of the statement that“Intelligence is closely associated with formal education”(Mike,Rose)and he puts forward that formal education can not always be used to measure the level of intelligence of a person.Or maybe it can be put in another way that intelligence has to be valued no matter where it is learned, from education or not. Therefore workplace can be regarded as an effective institution for people to learn and improve their intelligence step by step and education is not the only way for people to nurture higher intelligence. So a fair knowledge can be obtained that Rose hold that prejudice toward the blue-collar workers should be dissipated and people should not look down upon those workers because of their low education level.
Besides,Rose has as well elaborated on the requirements of both body and brain for work so as to well suggest that workplace can really train people’s intelligence, leading to people’s learning knowledge and intuition from within.Detailed speaking, those blue collar workers have to work smart and make her every move count if they would like to be effective at physical work. The work for those blue collar workers are not simply mindless tasks but tasks that call for intelligence and skills, suggesting that those workers have to make efforts in various ways for the work.In addition, they have to become adept at reading social cues and managing feelings so that they can be competent for their work.Obviously, when blue collar workers get themselves familiar with and more and more proficient in their work, their ability can be improved in the meantime.Based on this,it can be easily imagined that education can not be used as the only standard to evaluate people’s ability because those workers can as well acquire intelligence, skills and wisdom from the social and technological dynamics of their workplace through problem solving, proper planning and social interactions.
While the contrast of Hooks mainly concentrates on the differences of men and women, which can be predicted from two expressions in the article that“men still run the world”(Sheryl,Sandberg)and“the world needs women to change it”(Sheryl,Sandberg).Via such contrast,Sandberg would like to illustrate that there should be no bias toward women and women should be given equal rights and freedom as men. What Sandberg desires is that all the women can equip themselves well enough to step into the career world so that they can avoid a series of detrimental influences from sexism. And that is right why Sandberg explains that“the‘lean in’woman is never given a racial identity”(Sheryl,Sandberg),from which it can be found that women of all racial identities have the rights for“lean in”.Moreover, the process of women’s lean in to the workplace can actually be seen as one for those women to prove themselves and they do not have to regard themselves as one that is inferior to men any more.
The same as Rose,Sandberg also make judgments about the nature of women and work and she proposes that workplace is where women can acquire wealth even if they have to confront various obstacles as other women inside the workforce.Women’s being able to create wealth themselves can help indicate that they should not be despised. Here work is a feasible way for people to gain wealth and achieve personal improvement and it is right like the intelligence and intuition that those blue collar workers can gain from work mentioned by Rose.Sandberg further explains that efforts have to be made by those women to conquer those confronting obstacles if they would like to prove their own strength and fight for equal rights and freedom as men.Similarly, efforts paid to conquer a series of obstacles can be compared to the efforts made by those blue collar workers to get themselves familiar with their physical work stated by Rose.Based on this comparison,we can easily imagine that the process to overcome prejudice is an efforts-consuming one.
From both the articles of both Mike Rose and Sheryl Sandberg,a reasonable conclusion can be drawn that prejudice should be removed in any way and people should spare no efforts to fight for their own equal rights and freedom.Though the process of conquering prejudice may be a pains-taking experience for people,it should still be undergone when taking the great significance of equality and freedom into consideration.Only in this way can a large number of people really know clearly about the true meaning of equality in the due time and can they know how the life without prejudice is.
